Help Ever, Hurt Never

It all began with a quote by the late John Paul II………

“Each one of us, in some way, rubs against hunger and poverty of others.  We know how to share bread with those who don’t have it or those who have less than us.  We know how to open our hearts to the needs of our brothers and sisters, who suffer as a result of poverty and scarcity!  Sometimes they are ashamed of admitting it, hiding their hardship.  One must discreetly give them a brotherly, helping hand.“

 

But before we get into the details of this unique mission, we would first like to thank you, the benefactor, without whom this mission would not be possible.

All of us here at Rainbow of Magnolia Fountains of Life have been inspired by the people we met in African villages, and hopefully, after sharing their stories with you, the inspiration will grow with your kind support.

The people of villages are humble, hard-working, simple people who struggle in their daily life with things that many of us take for granted….water, electricity, lack of health care and opportunity to better their life.  They are not people who are looking for a hand-out, or for luxury, or for attention.

Up until recently, they relied on the river for all of their water needs.  Although the river flows from the glaciers it doesn’t offer the benefits most of us associate with glacial flows.  Animals and humans alike rely on this water source, leaving the river water mucky, and rich in microbial activity that reminds more of a sewer than a river.  Basically, the river does not fulfill the three basic needs it should fulfill:  consumption, hygiene, and irrigation.

Luckily, one borehole (deep well) was recently dug near the village, and has since been supplying the villagers with fresh ground water.  This is where we come in.  Drilling of the single borehole exposed the different water tables that exist in and around the village.  However, due to the complexity of drilling deep wells (administrative, engineering, political, and economical), we discovered that a simpler solution exists.  Shallow wells are easy to develop, require minimum engineering, and can be constructed quickly and efficiently. Just imagine how their life will change when all of the villagers will have access to drinking water.  No more bathing in the dirty river, no more digestive problems, no more constraints on access!

There is one more benefit of localized water.  Irrigation of fields.  The people have been trying to diversify their food sources for years.  But without access to water, their only source of food has been cattle and goat herding.  Due to extreme seasons, the villagers often suffer from malnutrition and its side-effects.  By introducing localized water sources, the villagers have been able to plant corn and tomatoes.  Corn flour will give the villagers bread products, and tomatoes will introduce vitamins and minerals that are essential to a balanced diet.  But our mission doesn’t end here…….

 

Agriculture, even in its most basic form, is quite complicated and requires training and education.  Crop cycles, weather patterns, irrigation techniques, and soil fertility are just a few of the topics that the villagers will study in their local schools.  We are hoping to sustain and further develop schools for all of the villagers, as well as folks from other surrounding villages (there are many villages in the neighborhood).  In addition to local schools, we want to support scholarships, existing and future ones, for higher education.  Currently, we have three village scholarship recipients who are attending the Technical institute.  All three recipients want to help their native village once they complete their degrees.  The village will soon have their own doctor!

Our plans are very ambitious, yet very realistic.  We’ve had a huge positive impact on the daily lives of the villagers, and with your generosity, we’ll be able to expand our aid.  Although water and education are the main drivers of our mission, we will also continue to support local girls’ shelters, after-school sports programs (soccer, running, etc.), as well as expand the existing electric grid which will bring refrigeration that we take for granted reality, power the school and other necessary pieces of basic infrastructure that we enjoy on daily basis and cannot imagine some people can only dream about.  It is our sincere hope that together we can realize the hopes and dreams of the families of this small, less fortunate community of Africa.

 

Second story comes to us from a missionary in another African country.  She is working in preschool that takes care and educates 400 children every year.  The children come from families of many religious background: Christian, Muslim, and many sects.  The mission does not discriminate, and every child is welcome.  Many more kids would like to come, but the size of the school (only 6 classrooms) is limited.  Imagine, while we are complaining about class size in our country, but how about 70-100 kids per class over there? And many many kid who cannot attend?   We know that education is a key to prosperity, so why not give them a chance to build better life for themselves and prosper.  There kids are hungry not only for food but for education.  If we contribute to their knowledge they will be able to take care of themselves and teach their children how to do it as well.

 

The same missionary met a woman in Africa and this is a sad story with no happy ending.  This woman has 4 children and no husband.  He has passed away some times ago and as this is tragedy in itself she and the kids were evicted from home provided by the company where he was working.  She found the housekeeping job and is working hard full time earning about $45/month.  From this about $30 goes to rent and the rest for food.  While she keeps $15/month (or about $.50 a day) the bag of rice (100 lbs), their basic food costs about $20.  The mission helps out with the food, but there is more bad news.  She was diagnosed with terminal illness for which  there is no cure.  She begs the mission to take care of the kids, but they cannot.  This is where we can help.  We can build basic home for the kids for about $2,000.  This way they will have shelter. The mission can help with food and clothing. The kids may be able to find some kind of part time job and go to school.  They will not be a homeless and easy pray for predators, animal and human alike, and become productive members of the society.  As we said there is no happy ending to this story, but we can make it better helping those kids survive and retain their dignity , perhaps even save their lives.

 

We at Rainbowofmagnoliafountainsoflife believe in human benevolence.  We do our part by donating time, money, and skills to help others.  We ask you kindly to help us with our mission.  We all can help the world one child at the time.  All 100% of your donations go to the cause.  If we travel we do it at our own penny.  The flyers, website, bookkeeping and legal advice are donated to the organization or purchased by board members with our own money earned in our jobs and businesses.  We DO NOT get paid, or expense anything from your donations.  The money you give you give to the kids. While we do not provide details of our operations at this time we keep it simple.  You help those kids and we make sure they will get what they need.

 

Thank you kindly for your time.  In the future we will post the continuation of the story of their lives and how it develops.  We will post pictures and describe progress you made possible.  No donation is too small.  We are grateful for everything you can provide, money, advice any kind of resource or reference.  However we do not accept any physical goods at this time since it is less expensive to purchase it at the destination the shipping, duty cost is prohibitive and our logistics are very limited.
